Blood Stains

He was just a little boy when I found hime there alone

Miles from a burning shack he said was his home

Together we rode back to where he’d been

He swore he’d never go back there again

Clucthing tight a .44 revolver he claimed that he had found

And there were blood stains on the ground

That young man and a younger girl on a lonely school house road

She said “I love you, Billy Ray”. He said “love you so.”

They walked down to the creek to be alone

A little girl never made it home

All innocence was lost in a moment and a woman can be found

In the blood stains on the ground

Two youngin’s barely old enough to have one on the way

Her father would not let her wed a scourge like Billy Ray

I sent ‘em off but her daddy heard the news

They made the train but a possee made it too

In the push and pull, and the back and forth, a gunshot . A cry her final sound

And there were blood stains on the ground

They say time heals everything but that just ain’t the truth

I prayed God would understand what Billy Ray would do

Loneliness is hard as it is cold

I watched his heartbroke mind unfold

he walked inside her daddy’s house with that .44. The violence was profound

And there were blood stains on the ground
